About Us
About the Alpha Eta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi
Since 1919, Kappa Kappa Psi has been devoted to advancing the college and university bands. The Fraternity is made up of hundreds of chapters all over the United States that share the same common goal of serving and promoting collegiate bands.
The University of Florida’s chapter, Alpha Eta, has the distinction of being the first chapter in the state of Florida and has been known for many years as a leader in the Southeast District as well as the nation.
Our Purposes
The Alpha Eta chapter is guided by the five purposes listed in the National Constitution of Kappa Kappa Psi. Informally stated, Alpha Eta is dedicated to (1) promoting the Gator Band; (2) honoring outstanding band members by offering membership to them; (3) providing leadership in our band program and on campus; (4) developing camaraderie and serving our band; and (5) providing a positive social experience for band members.
Service
The Alpha Eta chapter (AH) has served the band program and all its ensembles at the University of Florida since 1931. During marching band season, we provide complimentary water at practices, complimentary Gatorade to the Gator Band and visiting band; clean, sort, and pass out uniforms; sponsor social functions for the band; and provide assistance to the band staff when needed. We also set up and tear down concerts and rehearsals and do other miscellaneous projects for the band program such as painting the drum major ladders and reconfiguring the uniform room.
Social
UF is one of the largest universities in the United States and for some people it can be difficult finding a niche. Being involved with Kappa Kappa Psi helps make our university and its band program seem a lot smaller. Through our common commitment to service, we have developed a strong sense of brotherhood, in the fraternal sense of the word. In short, our brothers form meaningful relationships that last well beyond their college years. The fact that all of our members have shared the same hardships, experiences and goals has aided us in strengthening our bond. You would be hard-pressed to find such a group with such dedication, loyalty and zeal.
Leadership
Kappa Kappa Psi looks for and creates leaders in the band! Our brothers have been drum majors, band officers, section leaders and even band directors! We can produce these band leaders by letting each member have a chance to be a leader within the chapter. In the Alpha Eta chapter, every member counts. Every member has a job and a voice. That is just part of what makes membership in Kappa Kappa Psi so rewarding.
Requirements
Active members must be currently enrolled in the college band or wind ensemble and must have met uniformly high standards of performance, attitude, technical proficiency on their chosen instrument, and shown a definite interest in and appreciation for the best in music.
Membership in Kappa Kappa Psi calls for an active concern for and a willingness to support the collegiate band movement in all its forms. Through local projects and by direct participation in national programs, Kappa Kappa Psi members concentrate on activities of service to the bands where chapters are located.
Kappa Kappa Psi offers its members the opportunity to develop skills in leadership and organization directed by our purposes to do all that a well-organized and enthusiastic group can do to build and maintain a better band!
Kappa Kappa Psi is a member of the Professional Fraternity Association.
